How to Configure Windows 95/98 Dial Up Networking

  1. From your desktop, double-click My Computer.

  2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking folder.

  3. Double-click Make New Connection.

  4. Enter a name for the connection (for example: XiConnect).

  5. Select your modem in the drop down menu.

  6. Click Next.

  7. Enter your XiConnect access number. If you have Call Waiting on the line, put *70 before the number, and Call Waiting will be disabled while you are online with XiConnect. 949 Users will use 498-1480.

Note: Please check with your local telephone company to determine if any tolls apply when using the number provided to you by XiConnect. XiConnect assumes no responsibility for any long distance charges that you may incur.

Click Next, and then Finish.


Configuring the XiConnect DUN connection

  1. Open My Computer > Dial-Up Networking

  2. Highlight the Xi Connect connection then click File Menu > Properties
  3. On the Properties window, click on Server Type.

  4. In the Advanced Options you should not have any of the items checked. In the Allowed Network Protocols section , you should have only TCP/IP option checked.
  5. Then click on the TCP/IP Settings button.

    Here you will need to selected Server Assigned IP Address and select Check - Specify Name Server Addresses. Once selected, enter in the following information.
    • Primary DNS: 208.179.5.2
    • Secondary DNS: 216.116.96.2
    • Primary WINS: 0.0.0.0
    • Secondary WINS: 0.0.0.0
  6. Leave the bottom two items checked and then press OK until you are back to the Dial-Up Networking folder.


How to make a shortcut to the XiConnect DUN connection

  1. Open My Computer > Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Select your XiConnect connection icon.
  3. Click and drag the icon to the desktop. When prompted, choose Create Shortcut.

How to log into the XiConnect DUN connection

  1. Double-click the connection you have just created. (Or open My Computer > Dial-Up Networking)
  2. Type your username where it says Username (for example, mailbox@xiconnect.com, without the @xiconnect.com), all lower case.

  3. Type your XiConnect password where it says Password
    all lower case.
  4. Click Connect.

You will then hear the modem dial and the window will read Connecting to XiConnect. Once connected, you will see a timer begin counting up from zero, showing you how long you've been connected. You can then run any Internet software you choose. Just minimize the Connected to XiConnect window and launch your Internet applications manually. In some versions of Windows 95/98 the connected box will minimize itself into your task bar. To disconnect, click on the computer icon in the lower-right of your Windows 95/98 Task Bar.
